Apprentices from across The Calico Group came together to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2017, taking part in a week of inter-generational engagement activities and befriending, at Calico Homes’ Sheltered Schemes and beyond.
On Friday 10th March, to mark the end of National Apprenticeship Week, the apprentices held a Celebration Coffee Morning at Crow Wood Court with the residents. There were cakes and tea aplenty, and the apprentices were given the opportunity to sit and chat to the residents, getting to know them, discussing interests and hobbies, with some even reminiscing on their time as apprentices and young workers. Obviously no celebration is complete without games and prizes, and the apprentices were on hand coordinating the numerous games of bingo, with each taking it in turns to be the caller.
The nine apprentices from Ring Stones, Calico Homes, and Calico Enterprise are all managed by Calico Careers’ Constructing the Future shared apprenticeship programme, and volunteered their time to visit the older customers living in the schemes.
Suraiya Akram, Neighbourhood Apprentice, Calico Homes said: “It was great to be a part of National Apprenticeship Week as I got to meet other apprentices from across the Group, as well as being able to give something back to our older customers. I think they really appreciated the coffee morning and games of bingo, even asking if we would be back next week!”
Stuart Graham, Head of Skills and Employability, Calico Enterprise said: “This has been a great experience for our apprentices, and it has been a fantastic opportunity for them to get to know the wider business and our customers. We would like to thank all of the apprentices and customers that have taken part in the activities.”
