We were deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of 2-year-old, Awaab Ishak, who died as result of exposure to mould in his family home. It has rightly prompted all housing providers, including everyone at Calico Homes, to reflect on the issues of damp, mould and condensation.
We accept that we, and the wider housing sector, can and must do better. Our priority is, and always should be our customers.
We own and manage around 5200 properties, of which many are older properties. Roughly 1 out of every 50 contacts we receive are related to damp or condensation, and while we already do a lot of work around damp or condensation, we are taking steps to review and improve our approach to dealing with these situations – this includes speeding up our current processes.
We know from the work we have been doing in recent months by speaking to our customers, that replacing windows is a priority to us. As a result, we have made commitments through our investment programme to improve the standards of our customers’ homes and continue with day-to-day repairs to houses across our communities. We have already started window replacement programme and other home improvement programmes in some areas.
