Calico Homes and council join forces to tidy Burnley neighbourhoods

Residents living across Barclay Hills and the Griffin Estate have seen a real boost to their neighbourhoods following a joint clean-up day led by Calico Homes and Burnley Council’s Streetscene team.

The day was organised in response to concerns raised by local people about issues such as fly‑tipping, untidy gardens and the general look and feel of the area.

Calico Homes and Burnley Council’s Streetscene officers came together to provide extra on‑the‑ground support, with the aim of helping residents make positive changes and restoring a sense of pride across the estates. While the majority of residents take real pride in their homes, a small minority of offenders has been affecting the wider neighbourhood.

Additional waste management vehicles were brought in for the day, along with extra litter‑picking equipment and free waste items such as bins and refuse bags for residents who needed them.

Officers also went door to door, offering advice, answering questions and helping people sort issues there and then. Discounted garden waste removals were offered on the spot to make it easier for households to clear unwanted items, and Calico’s Clean and Green team were on hand carrying out some intensive communal garden works to try and improve the landscaping in the area.

The focus of the initiative is firmly on raising standards, supporting residents and building a stronger sense of ownership and pride across both estates.

Speaking on the day, Emily, Neighbourhood Officer at Calico Homes, explained: “This clean‑up day really showed the strength of partnership working. By working closely with Burnley Council, we’ve been able to give residents the support, tools and confidence they need to take pride in their neighbourhood.

“Today wasn’t just about tidying up; it was about showing our customers that we’re here for them, that we listen, and that we’re committed to creating a safer, cleaner and more positive place to live.

“I can already see a huge improvement across the estate, and I’m looking forward to seeing even more progress in the weeks ahead.”

Calico Homes is now monitoring the area more closely and will continue working with residents to support long‑term improvements.

Work will continue over the coming weeks and months as Calico Homes and Burnley Council look to build on the momentum from the clean-up day and keep the improvements going.
