Sustainability Club pupils make pledges for a greener future

Children from Holy Trinity Church of England School’s Sustainability Club have been thinking about the small changes they can make to help the environment after welcoming Calico’s Going Green Team to one of their after-school sessions.

Around 22 pupils aged between five and 10 took part in the visit, which was led by Catherine Hartley, alongside Abbie Sullivan and Mark Ashworth.

The team spoke with the children about sustainability, what it means in everyday life and how simple actions can make a difference. The session included an environmental video and an introduction to Mr Prickle, the Going Green Team’s mascot.

After learning about sustainability, the children got creative by colouring in Mr Prickle and choosing one of his five focus areas: waste, energy, travel, procurement or biodiversity.

Each child then made a personal pledge linked to their chosen topic, thinking about what they could do to help look after the environment. Their pledges were displayed on a pledge board, where they also had the opportunity to have their photo taken.

The pupils were enthusiastic throughout the session, sharing ideas, asking questions and getting involved in the activities. Their pledges showed a real understanding of the role everyone can play in creating a more sustainable future.

Mrs Rebecca Law, teacher and School Sustainability Lead, said: “The Calico Going Green session was a fantastic opportunity to come together, share ideas and inspire positive action.

“The children from our school Sustainability Club had lots of fun and came away feeling inspired to help create a greener, more sustainable future.”

The visit is part of the Going Green Team’s ongoing work to encourage conversations around sustainability and help people feel empowered to make positive changes, whether at home, in school or in their communities.
