Green learning and community fun at Springfield Together

Calico’s Going Green team recently attended a stakeholder event held at Springfield Primary School in Burnley to inspire children and families to think more positively about the environment.

Around 120 pupils and their parents attended Springfield Together, creating a friendly, busy atmosphere where local organisations could connect with the community. The Going Green team used the opportunity to talk to families about what they do, while also raising awareness of Calico’s wider services.

One of the highlights of the day was a hands-on recycling game created by the team where children were asked to place everyday items into the correct bins. This helped them learn more about recycling and waste in a fun and practical way, and correct answers were rewarded with a chocolate egg, which quickly became very popular!

The game prompted lots of conversations, with children keen to talk about recycling, ask questions, and show what they already knew about looking after the environment. Parents also took time to speak with the team and find out more about Calico’s commitment to sustainability and the support on offer to tenants and customers.

As well as the Going Green Team, other services in attendance included Safenet and Lancashire Police, which collectively helped to make Springfield Together a great example of local services working together for the benefit of the community.

Wendy Malone of the Going Green Team said: “Climate change can feel overwhelming but today showed how quickly that changes when you make it interactive.

“The games brought the message to life for children and families; sparking curiosity, conversation, and simple actions people can take every day.

“When learning is enjoyable, awareness spreads further and sticks for longer.”

The Going Green team were really pleased with the response on the day and the level of enthusiasm shown by the children and families. Events like this highlight just how important it is to start conversations about the environment early, while bringing communities and services together in a positive and engaging way.
