July Calico Community Choice update

Since our last update, we’ve seen great progress from our Round One winners. Warm Hearts Coffee Morning, Burnley Wood Community Group Dance Lessons and Casual Minds Matter have all been working hard over the last few months putting their grants to good use in the community.

Our Round Two winners were also announced back in June. Outdoor 4alltogether: Campfire & Conversation and Rosegrove Youth & Community Hub are now busy working on their projects.

Not only that, we’re now accepting submissions for Round Three and will keep you updated along the journey.

So, what have our Round One winners been up to?

Warm Hearts Coffee Morning

Warm Hearts’ Coffee Morning received funding to provide breakfast, lunch and a safe space for people in the community every Friday.

The coffee morning is creating community and friendships for volunteers and members. Lots of members come to the coffee morning for breakfast or lunch and do a shop in the grocery too.

From 12th April 2024 – 21st June 2024, nearly 500 people have visited for a brew – that’s an average of 45 people per week!

So far, funding has been spent on loads of brew-time favourites, including Yorkshire Tea bags, decaf Tetley tea bags, Nescafe Gold Blend, decaf coffee and instant hot chocolate.

Many other essentials have also been bought, including sugar, blackcurrant cordial, orange squash, assorted jam pots, napkins, foil, teaspoons, UHT milk and a can opener.

Free dance classes by Burnley Wood Community Group

Burnley Wood Community Group received funding to host free dance classes for kids to make sure every child in the area has access to the same opportunities.

The classes now run on a recurring 12-week program, with 13 young kids attending on a regular basis. Moving forward, we’ve proposed an older kids dance club later in the year which we’re working on with our instructor. We are also exploring any opportunity where we can arrange a local competition.

The kids now have a safe space to attend a project they enjoy undertaking and couple of the kids are regular volunteers at our lunch club. It’s great to give them a safe space for social interaction and fitness.

We announced our Round Two winners!

In June, we also announced winners from Round Two – Rosegrove Youth & Community Hub and Outdoor 4alltogether: Campfire and Conversations. The Round Two winners have now received their funding and are eager to share their progress with you.

Campfire and Conversation
Every Tuesday morning, Campfire and Conversation is held at the Canal and River Trust building in Rosegrove. Everyone is welcome to join and get involved.

Rosegrove Youth & Community
Using their funding, the Rosegrove Community Watch are busy creating a community space, which will be located in the Rosegrove Railway car park. Due to be completed in September, the hub will be a place for the community to enjoy activities, workshops and sessions for all ages.

Micheal at Rosegrove Neighbourhood Watch said: “We are so excited to get our Youth & Community Hub in Rosegrove. We’re expecting delivery at the end of July beginning of August 2024. This will allow us to run activities, workshops and sessions for all ages. We are working on funding applications at the moment for furniture and we are working with the printers, designer on our new in-house data base system BRSK for the internet and artist to design the outside of the building. This is exciting times for us all.”

Want to apply for Round Three?

We’re now accepting submissions for Round Three and will keep you updated along the journey.

It’s vital that we continue to support community ventures in Burnley to help build and create more sustainable communities. None of this would have been possible without your backing and votes.
