Calico staff go from bricks to books to support Uganda project

A group of Calico staff will provide essential materials to get children in Uganda learning for a second year running, thanks to a generous donation from an Accrington printing company.

Through the One Brick at a Time scheme, the group – Donna Tetley, Natasha Holt, and Hannah Buckley – have travelled to Fort Portal, Uganda, in April for three weeks to help improve and renovate educational and health centres in the area.

As part of their commitment to raise funds that will contribute towards building and refurbishment costs, the group has already taken part in a range of activities – including raffles and inter-company football tournaments – to raise over £4000 for the cause.

The group are now also able to provide the children of Fort Portal with a range exercise books and learning materials, which have been kindly donated by Direct-Ed, who offer a range of education resources.

Donna Tetley said:

“We’re delighted that Direct-Ed has once again offered to kindly donate their exercise books – they will make such a difference to the children of Fort Portal’s learning experiences.

“We’ve all been blown away by everyone’s generosity, particularly Calico staff. Their support will make a huge difference.”

Joe Mugan, Director of Sales and Marketing at Direct-Ed, said:

“It has been a pleasure working with Calico to make this happen. We feel it is a child’s right to have an education, and what learning process is complete without exercise books?

“We would just like to thank Calico and the team for giving us the opportunity to make a difference. We wish them the best of luck on their project.”

One Brick at a Time is a charitable organisation based in Uganda, with partners in the UK, which provides skills exchanges between the developed and developing worlds, helping to address issues of poverty and education attainment.
