Excellence in Community Safety award presented to Calico Homes

Calico Homes has been honoured with the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Shrievalty Rose Bowl 2026 for its Pheasantford Green Gate Project, which has made a lasting difference to safety in the local area.

The project was developed in response to longstanding concerns from residents about antisocial behaviour. Working closely with the community, Calico Homes and PC McKee from Burnley Police took time to understand the issues and identify what would have the greatest impact.

Their work led to the installation of new gates and access control measures around Pheasantford Green, changes residents had been requesting for some time. Since then, people living in the area have reported feeling safer, more in control, and prouder of their neighbourhood.

A key partner in the project was Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC), a longstanding collaboration between Lancashire Constabulary, local businesses, and public services. Their funding supports community led safety initiatives across the county, and they recognised early on that the Pheasantford Green Gate Project was worthy of the Rose Bowl Award.

Calico’s Community Safety Coordinator, Lyndsey, said: “A simple project like this might not seem like much, but for this community it has made a real and immediate difference.

“Projects like this show the true value of working hand in hand with the Police; when we collaborate, we make our neighbourhoods safer and stronger.”The success of the project was the result of collective effort, with Calico Homes, partner organisations, and residents all contributing their expertise and commitment.

Constable Chris McKee from Lancashire Police explained: “During visits to households in the area, it became clear that the layout of some properties inadvertently created sheltered spots that attracted unwanted visitors. One resident, however, had resolved this issue by installing a gate, which acted as an effective barrier and deterred trespassers.

“Burnley College was contacted to explore whether the joinery department could support the initiative by producing gates for residents who had been impacted by antisocial behaviour. They immediately agreed and generously offered to build and install more than 15 gates.

“Since the installation of the gates, calls for police service have reduced dramatically—from 60 calls in the previous year to just five in the following nine months. This project stands as an excellent example of the impact that effective partnership working, and community collaboration can achieve.”

This award highlights Calico Homes’ commitment to building safer, more supportive neighbourhoods and the positive change that happens when communities are listened to and involved in shaping solutions.
